The Bachelorettealum, 30, exclusively tells PEOPLE about a relaxing vacation he booked to Fiji in order to unwind following the grueling trials he faced on Fox’s boot camp-style reality series.

“I was pretty much everyone’s third wheel,” he laughs. “It was a honeymoon place, and I was just hanging out with a few couples I’d never met. They’re all like, ‘Who’s this annoying guy? Leave us alone. We’re trying to enjoy intimate time.’”

Despite feeling like the odd man out, the reality star explains why it was important for him to “get away” and “not go to my people right away.”

“I wanted to really digest what I went through,” Cameron says, noting how he used his time to write notes, journal and read. “And then I got back to my people eventually, but I really needed time to digest it on my own, because what we went through was truly deep, remarkable.”

“I wanted to really try and feel it all before I got back to my people, because I knew I’d just get right back to work and everything, and just normal days of life,” he adds.

Cameron was one of three recruits to pass selection in season 2 ofSpecial Forces: World’s Toughest Test.

In the season finale, Cameron stood alongside formerBachelorNick Vialland Olympic gold medal speed skaterErin Jacksonas the staff evaluated his performance on the series.

“About midway through this program, you started to step it up,” said Directing Staff Remi Adeleke. “You started to demonstrate that fire that we were looking for. You turned into the sled dog on all the team tasks out here. You showed us another level. So we asked ourselves, do you have what it takes to stand beside us?”

“One consistent thing in my life is [that] I’ve always beenthis close,” Cameron admitted while holding an inch’s width of distance between his fingers. “I’ve always just come up just short. And I think the biggest thing I want to prove to myself from here is that I can close that gap.”

“I want to make it to the end,” he said just before it was revealed he’d passed.

The trio shared an emotional moment as they were met with hugs and congratulations from their instructors. They returned to their barracks and shared a group embrace before heading on their final hike with the rest of the staff.

“I’m just mostproud of pushing myselfbeyond whatever I knew I could, but the biggest reflection that I learned is the man I want to be,” Cameron said. “This is a huge stepping stone in the foundation to really build my future.”
