George R.R. Martin ’s amazing A Song of Ice and Fire throws in random constituent that seem to hail out of nowhere … then make pure common sense . So when he put in a unusual drug to his post - apocalyptic story , it ’s startling but idea - provoking .
Martin ’s news report , “ … For A Single Yesterday , ” was in the beginning published in 1975 , but it ’s just beenrepublished for free up at Lightspeed Magazine . And asunder from some references to the Vietnam warfare and early 1970s phratry - rock , it ’s just as fresh today as it was back then — possibly even more relevant than ever , given our current obsesssion with post - apocalyptic stories and the way in which the great unwashed will try out to exist after a civilizational collapse .
I do n’t require to give too much away , but the drug that Martin introduces into his post - apocalyptic worldly concern is n’t what you think it is at first — and it does n’t jerk us aside from the central theme of what form of culture — what form of leadership — is necessary to hold up after the Revelation of Saint John the Divine . ( The irony is , Martin seems to hint that the leadership you ’d need to get through a post - revelatory worldly concern really is the same kind that caused the Book of Revelation in the first place . ) Instead , the drug sheds a thematic light on the floor ’s central question : Is it beneficial to seek to hold up on to the past times , or just appear forward and seek to rebuild , even when the past is amazing and the future is bleak even in the best case scenario ?

As usual , Martin avoids make any character in the story one - dimensional or strictly good or sorry , and he does n’t spoonfeed the lecturer answer — even though it ’s clear by the oddment of the write up that one character is mostly ripe , he ’s not completely right , and in the terminal , natural selection means more than just making some sacrifices — it means debasing our cultivation . It ’s a engrossing read , well deserving look into out . [ Lightspeed Magazine ]
