Viewing 3D mental object without glasses or goggles has proved to be one of the toughest matter for user interface couturier to reach — it never really looks correct . At this year ’s SIGGRAPH , a group of researcher represent a display that creates a 3D human being in sensational item using a cluster of 216 projectors .
Ateam from USC ’s Institute for Creative Technologieshas built an automultiscopic 3D show which essentially makes a 3D model of the individual with video . After capturing TV of a person using 30 cameras in intensely bright light , the look-alike are separate among the 216 projectors . The projector are arranged in a hemicycle around a large screen , so as TV audience take the air around the concealment their eye smoothly transition from one protrusion to the next . The result is feeling as if you’re able to see crystal - clear depth and detail .
Since it ’s so realistic , the technical school is being used to make full - scale “ digital humans ” which could be used in a museum or educational context . Speech recognition aid cue up answers to questions so it feels synergistic even if it ’s not . And because the humans are so realistic , you feel like the soul is really making eye contact with you and listening closely as you ’re talking to them .

When I saw this at action at SIGGRAPH it was playing the engrossing storage of a Holocaust subsister . Unlike so many other attempts at hologram or innovative VR experiences that admit you to “ babble out ” to people , this one felt the most literal . And honest to the description , as you walk from one side of the screen door to the other , you were capable to see new details in his face and clothing .

Of naturally , the story this digital homo was tell were in particular captivating but I also think the engineering was especially piquant . twelve of mass crowd around this man to hear his tales , and it felt as if he was right there in front of us . That fact that we weren’twearing goggles and stumbling around to see itmade the experience that much more poignant .
