Everbody love a skillful dark , horrifying fantasy . A misanthopic adventure , in which everybody is morally compromise , and we all live on and die in the dirt . But every now and then , it ’s nice to understand a fantasy novel in which people are , you know … secure .
So we decided to adjoin some of our favorite fantasy author and editor , to get some recommendation for illusion novels that are not just optimistic — but optimistic about human nature . This is a good , smart interrogative and I did n’t have to cogitate long to come up with William Goldman ’s The Princess Bride . His classic novel has all the elements I require in a book : characters I care about , capital prose , and a tale that I ca n’t guess the ending of after learn a few chapters . It ’s suspicious , sure — clever in places , slapstick in others — but what I liked comfortably was that the character really give care about doing the right thing throughout .
I ’m kind of torn between a classic and something that should be a classic , and far better discern . My first go to is The Lord of the Rings , because at the end of the 24-hour interval , though the ending is bittersweet , the better holy person have rejoice . Not unscathed , nor unchanged , but the book gives me a sense of hope that courage and honour can defeat immorality .
My other nominee is a serial publication , and that ’s the Chrestomanci serial by Diana Wynne Jones . There are many shades of grey in these al-Qur’an , and their characters , but I do n’t extend to the final stage of the saga feeling hopeless and get the better of . mayhap a bit battered , and sad for some , but like the Tolkien – there ’s Leslie Townes Hope that iniquity can be put back in the box . I think Peter S. Beagle is great at such thing — A okay and Private Place and Folk of the Air both have their darkness , but are ultimately about how bright and wonderful the public can be , and how joy can be found even amid excruciation and calamity .
And Neil Gaiman ’s The Graveyard Book is perfectly the most uplifting book I ’ve ever read that part with the murder of someone ’s intact family — it ’s reveals how you’re able to create a new household from hoi polloi you receive in your life , and how broken people can come up wholeness together .
One of my favorite fantasy novel , and one I hark back to repeatedly , is John Bellairs ’s The Face in The Frost . It ’s a low - key and somewhat oddly construct record , but I love the friendship between the two sensation and the fact that they ’re attempt to do the right thing , without motion and without guidance . It ’s something that matches my experience , the idea that hoi polloi rise to the social function and somehow muddle through , despite the odds against them . A lot of my favourite fancy novels , both grainy and non - gritty , are about friendships and the forcefulness we can draw from them in the quests we go through on a daily base .
I should start by say that my favorite fantasy falls on the sullen , gritty side . I was much more of a Morcock rooter than a Tolkien one , with my roots in swords & sorcery not heroic , but with that caution … Of all the Scripture I ’ve ever been associated with , the one I ’m steering my own girl to first when she ’s ready for adult SF&F is move to beJoel Shepherd ’s Sasha , book one of the Trial of Blood & Steel quartet .
