Why get married when you ’re the last two masses on Earth ? That ’s the interrogative Phil Miller face when his sole human fellow traveller insists on walk down the gangway . But he set out to wonder if making the best ( raisin lump ) of a defective situation ( Carol ) is n’t so awful after all . Well … at least until the very end of the episode .
Last hebdomad , our nominal last man on Earth harmonise to Carol ’s need that they get married . Early in the installment , we learn Phil ’s great fear about marriage : that somehow he ’ll wed Carol out of despair only to learn that they ’re not the last two masses on Earth . When he wake up from a Timothy Miles Bindon Rice - befuddle incubus , Phil decide , with some rest , that the nightmare is impossible . He and Carol are still alone . For now .
Carol reinforces that idea that other hoi polloi are an impossibility when she brings over a metaphor for dinner : spaghetti with raisin balls . Other masses , Carol evoke , are meatball — something neither of them will ever see again . Carol has decide to make raisin balls or else , symbolical of piss the best out of a speculative situation . Phil is n’t further when Carol ’s metaphor raise inedible .
So , while Carol goes to work crafting up a storm , Phil has a bachelor company with a flame thrower , a gang of booze , and some pilfered wig . It ’s decent to see that Phil still has his cohort of Lucille Ball friend . Just because he now has human society , that does n’t intend he ca n’t indulge in a piddling healthy insanity .
Even before these two ( literally ) softheaded kids say their “ I do”s , it ’s clear that Phil and Carol , for all their difference , match together reasonably well . Carol ’s insisting that Phil become President of the United States check with her desire to see the trappings of the older reality maintained , but there ’s a weird foxiness too it , a mischievous glint in Kristen Schaal ’s centre when she typeset up a prank that will only pay off on the wedding night . And where Phil is capable to apprise the finer aspects of the post - Book of Revelation — eating next to a T - Rex skull , try out with different forms of death — Carol is industrious and originative . Sure , raisin ball and eggplant wedding cake are terrible , but at least she ’s try . They never would have looked double at one another before the apocalypse , but there is unattackable grounds that , in the post - Book of Revelation , she ’s the lid to his cracked pot .

The Last human on Earth is pretty obvious on the point that Phil and Carol ’s marriage is an exaggerated version of any other spousal relationship . Even with no one else around , Phil is afraid of go down . Carol ’s dream marriage ca n’t live on up to her ( admittedly meager ) expectation . But the key thing about a marriage is this : it ’s about people building a home . As much as Phil and Carol aim each other up the wall , Phil quickly realizes that she ’s his home . And you know , he could do bad than a woman who raids craft stores and paste a byssus on the cake topper just to make it a little more special .
Once Phil decides to dive into this whole marriage thing , Carol seems metamorphose . Perhaps all that she need was the security of bind herself to Phil to allow her own inner Phil out to fiddle . When they shoot the breeze a jewelry store , she does n’t just require an engagement ring and a simple band — she wants all the sparkly matter . She ’s unforced to listen to Phil ’s feedback on sex . She gleefully plays racquetball in the house , part in Phil ’s fascination with destroying matter , and gamely beats up the mannequin Phil osculate in the buffer . As before long as she becomes Phil ’s wife , she ’s capable to unstrain and become his friend .
For an instant , Phil recollect that getting married was the best decisiveness they could have made .

But there are a lot of direction that this could go . Yes , Phil could unfreeze his wedding with Carol , but perhaps that wo n’t bump . Maybe January Jones ’ character is sunny . perchance they ’ll all try polygamy . mayhap she ’ll drive off into the sunset , deciding she does n’t need humanity as much as these two lunatics do . But after seeing what a proficient abode he wee-wee with Carol , it would be disappointing to see Phil leave out her feelings now that she ’s not the last woman on Earth .
