The deadliest ocean serpent in the existence can be found from the Arabian Peninsula to Australia . They like to survive in estuaries and lagoon near the shoring and have been know to get tangled in fisherman ’s nets and inflict black bite . Their venom is extremely toxic , more potent than that of a cobra .

But the virulent sea serpent has a secret — it is in reality two sea snake species , as pointed out by Ed Yong in hisblog Not Exactly Rocket Science .

Our amazing planet.

scientist once think that snakes in Australia and Asia were the same coinage , Enhydrina schistosa . The snake from these regions do look standardized , with beaklike mouths that have a pass between the lower jaws .

However , when University of Queensland researcher Bryan Fry and workfellow tested the serpentine DNA , the issue showed that they were separate specie , and not even close relative , asnoted by the publication Asian Scientist .

This is a case ofconvergent evolution , wherein different specie acquire severally but terminate up looking quite like , according to the report , publish recently in the journal Molecular Phylogenetics & Evolution . Or , as Yong put it , convergent development is " when unlike species turn up at liveliness ’s company jade the same clothes . "

count that these animals are responsible for the majority of deaths due to ocean snakes , it ’s significant to fuck the identicalness of the different species . Luckily , however , the antivenene used to deal bites from the Australian and Asian version of this " species " lick on both , according to the sketch .

Both ocean snake feed almost exclusively on prickly wolf fish and puffer fish , which requires the serpent to open up its jaw very astray . The scientist suggest this is one rationality for their similar show ; the notched jaw permit them to swallow these puppet whole .

The researchers have proposed new names for the sea snake that will substantially ruminate their evolutionary account . The Asian serpent should keep on the nameEnhydrina schistosa , they suggest , while the Australian mintage could be dubbedEnhydrina zweifeli .
