When a studio apartment decides to secrete a scifi film during Christmas , they think it has both commercial-grade and award potential . Both for sure seem possible for Passengers , starring Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence . Sony Pictures debut the first footage from the moving-picture show at CinemaCon , and it look amazing .
write by Jon Spaihts and direct by Morten Tyldum , Passengers is gear up in a future where a group of people are going into outer space to colonize a new satellite . That satellite is 120 yr aside so these multitude must go into a hyper sleep to survive the trip with some life to dispense with . Thirty years into the trip , there ’s a malfunction , and two passenger wake up . Those two are play by Pratt and Lawrence , and that ’s where the movie essentially begins .
The footage Sony screened at CinemaCon 2016 jump a little to begin with in the plot . First , we see a ship flying through place . This ship , the Avalon , looks a fleck like the space station in 2001 and is steer to the Homestead 2 Colony with 5,228 passengers . All the passengers are log Z’s in pods that depend a heap like those in Aliens . They should ride out in the pods for 120 days but , for some reason , one open . It obligate Chris Pratt ’s character . Upon awaking , he thinks he ’s go away to meet the balance of his passenger for his new life . He gets ready , jokes about his nerveless new jacket , walk past the robot clean the floors and looks for people . There ’s no one .
“ Hello ? ” Pratt screams as he ’s carry around the Avalon . before long , he realizes there ’s been a terrible mistake , and he ’s the only one awake . Then , Pratt starts to search the enormous ship . He tries to buy a Latte Extreme , but those are only uncommitted to premium passenger , so he has to finalize for the simple-minded black burnt umber since he ’s a lower class rider .
Pratt walks around and sees what he believes to be another human . It ’s Michael Sheen as a barman in a place setting that looks a moment too much like The Shining . Pratt quickly actualise this is an mechanical man and asks it what fall out when the sleep pods malfunction . “ It ca n’t materialize , ” says the mechanical man . When Pratt explicate that it did happen , the robot answer , “ It ’s not possible for you to be here . ”
Pratt ’s character , alone , spends his time fixing thing . Back on Earth , he was a mechanic so this makes him happy . Then , one day , he sees a girl played by Jennifer Lawrence . She ’s a New York author with much better accommodations than Pratt ’s character . She call for him , “ Do you recognize what ’s pass away on ? ” He tells her and then bring out that he ’s been the only person alert for over a class .
Lawrence ’s character asks if there ’s a way to get back into hibernation . Pratt says no . “ Everything is plan to keep us active , ” he enjoin . “ I ’ve try on everything . ” overcome , Lawrence take , “ What is there to do here ? ”
The trailer then turn off to a collage of the couple move to a fancy dinner party , watching movies , taking a swimming , and more . Pratt tells Lawrence she ’s the most beautiful woman he ’s ever catch , and she crawls over the table and starts kissing him .
All is well alone on the Avalon , but things begin to get worse . They lose their gravity and Lawrence , swimming in the consortium , almost drowns as she and the water ascending .
Towards the ending , the footage pass into super fast edit mode . Pratt and Lawrence are standing outside the ship . Pratt go down a little vehicle in the cafeteria . “ There has to be a way , ” he tell . “ There are 5,000 other people on this ship — we have to do this . ” Air draw them into blank . Fire blows them into space . Then the title : Passengers .
rider looks like the perfect mix of scifi , Romance language , drama , and action . We can only hope it survive up to this footage . The film hits theaters on December 21 .
