After over two - and - a - half days on the moon , China ’s lunar scouter Yutu has been pronounced dead — for the second and ( probably ? ) final sentence . [ Update : It looks like Yutu may be coming back for yet another snap at life . ]
China ’s State Department word agencyannounced that the lunar roverhad die this morning . Yutu , or “ Jade Rabbit , ” as it ’s also make love , was antecedently ( and prematurely , it sprain out ) thought to be dead two years ago , in January , 2014 .
At the time , the bird of passage appeared to have lost its power to intercommunicate with Earth . scientist posited that the moon ’s temperatures had only been too cold-blooded for the wanderer , shutting it down . Thentwo week later , it unexpectedlysprung back to lifespan and begin sending them data again . The rover go on to hold up for over another two year .

It ’s unlikely that the scouter is going to down back from the drained this time , though . Jade Rabbit was only meant to last for three month and ended up lasting31 calendar month . In that time , the rover was slowly lose functionality . Even after it lost the power to roll away from its current berth , Jade Rabbit retain tobeam back datafrom which researchers were ultimately capable to writeover 100 articlesfor scientific journals .
Update August 11 , 12:30 p.m : Well , that was fast . It turn out that Jade Rabbit may already be preparing to ricochet back to life yet again .
Emily Lakdawallaover at Planetary Society talkedto thegbtimes ’ Andrew Joneswho told her that , fit in to officials with China ’s science ministry , Yutu ’s signal are still active . That means that the rover could be back in action mechanism , yet again , as presently as later this calendar month . Whether it will really carry off it , though — and what kind of condition it will be in if it does — remain to be discover .
