One of the good repugnance RPGs ever is coming back , after a 20 - class absence . Chill 3rd Edition puts players in the roles of outside agents fight against supernatural forces of darkness — power that have had the upper hand for too long .
The first variant of Chill was published by a small ship’s company called Pacesetter in the 1980s . It was then picked up by Mayfair and free as a 2nd edition . I play this edition a gross ton in mellow school , and it became one of my favourite RPGs . Mayfair stopped publishing it in 1993 , however , and it ’s languished ever since . Sometimes I ’ll see a megabucks of every individual Chill supplement at a yardbird for like $ 200 and be sorely tempted .
The people at Growling Door Games are fans of Chill , too , and some light contemplation eventually led to them licensing Chill and produce this novel 3rd Edition . The Kickstarter for the projectis already a succeeder .

This version moves the timeline of the game forward . The Societas Argenti Viae Eternitata ( SAVE ) was lame by an attack on their Dublin archives more than 20 years ago . Since then , SAVE agents have been forced underground , infiltrated by the forces of the obscure , and with no one to help them when the lights go out . A new leader has come forth , however , with a visual sensation for a decentralised SAVE that can shine some visible radiation into the dark corners of the humanity .
The rules for 3rd Edition largely mirror the original percentile scheme . Some rolls are binary crack / fail , some have grade of achiever . wheeling doubles always amplifies your result , so if you conk out and roll doubles , it ’s a botch , and if you succeed and ramble doubles , it ’s a colossal winner .
They ’ve added a token system that lets role player riff a token from the lite side to the dark side to attain a bonus or attain something very hard ( or avoid a terrible fate ) . But the GM can then flip out dark side tokens over to the light side to activate the abilities of certain beast and scoundrel . This sort of item telephone exchange system is something I ’ve grown to jazz in RPGs , so I ’m really frantic to see it in Chill . One of the stretch goals for the game is a boxed set with custom token .

Growling Door shared with us this sole prevue from Chill 3rd Edition that report the history of SAVE ’s new loss leader , Hayat Nejem :
2012: A New Leader
Hayat Nejem is a soldier , SAVE envoy and leader . She hail from a military family in Syria . Her father , both grandfathers , several uncle , and three of her buddy served in Hafez al - Assad ’s army . Life was not loose ; al - Assad was ever wary of treason from those unaired to him . Prominent military families were check up to close scrutiny , constantly test their commitment and dedication to Syria ’s loss leader . As a result , Hayat grew up in an atmosphere of distrust and paranoia .
Hayat never fulfill al - Assad in person — as a daughter , her family would not put her forward — but she control him at public gatherings intend to honor the ego - style chairwoman . On these occasions , Hayat figure terrible shadows wriggle around him , caress him as one might a buff . Once , when she was five , she told her mother what she had seen and was strike in response . Hayat never talk of it again , but could n’t shake the feeling that something was awfully wrong with the gentleman’s gentleman that rule her land .
Hayat ’s spirit of disquiet intensified under the 2nd al - Assad , though not because of any knowledge of the Unknown . Alerted by her vision , she became more and more cognizant of the mundane ferocity commit by al - Assad against his people — the intimidation , disappearances , and torture . Surely this was no way for a leader to acquit against his own citizenry , and yet her family kept scorch al - Assad ’s congratulations . Her uncle was the elision , the one member of her family who seemed to share Hayat ’s concerns .

In 2010 , Hayat ’s uncle separated from al - Assad ’s forces along with several other military leaders and founded the Syrian Free Army . Hayat was eighteen at the time . She want to link but her uncle forbade it , cite that she was too young and ( more importantly ) a woman . She ignored him and connect anyway , effectively cutting off all tie with her parent and sib .
Hayat was not the strongest combatant in the Syrian Free Army , but she was compulsive and courageous , often offer for missions no one else dared pinch . More significantly , she had nonrational tactical insight . Even without training , Hayat instinctively eff how to discern the foe ’s weak spot and how best to approach . More than anything else , this gift drew aid from the Free Army ’s leading and earned Hayat ’s commander several triumph .
Over time , Hayat ’s foreign mission grew more and more strange . It even became a jape among the other soldiers that campaign alongside Hayat was a sure fashion to run into inexplicable communicating opprobrious - outs , crimson - eyed domestic dog , wrinkled men seemingly too old to even be alive , and other foreign happening . Hayat did n’t cognize it at the meter , but she was sensitive to the Unknown — she always had been . She attributed the strangeness to coincidence . The feeling of incorrectness she go through when bet at al - Assad was simply the first sign of the zodiac , and she was drawn to push it wherever it was . Someone else acknowledge , however , changing her life history everlastingly .

In 2011 , Hayat was recruited by El - Hasham , the de - facto leader of SAVE in the Fertile Crescent . Hayat ’s recruitment did not go smoothly . She had no interest in fighting unnamed shadows while an real war was hold up on . El - Hasham , however , appealed to Hayat ’s inside fire . The campaign she feel , he argued , pass far beyond defend mortal wars . She was called by Allah to push the majuscule dark itself . When that did not persuade her , he aim out that SAVE could be a worthful ally in bringing down al - Assad ; Hayat reluctantly agreed . El - Hasham , happy to sign another promising name , continued on his stage business and let other minister plenipotentiary prepare the newcomer , as was standard practice for SAVE ’s mediate Eastern branch . Hayat , however , was not a standard military recruit . She quick grew thwarted with SAVE and its seeming unfitness to compromise and capitalise on smaller opportunities . After six months she barged into El - Hasham ’s office and jeopardise to leave if he did not take heed to her idea . The result was the manifesto that would lead SAVE in a new direction .
Three years has passed and Hayat still struggle . Somewhere in the frenzy of SAVE rebuilding , she found herself call upon to lead and step up to the task . She does n’t regard herself to be a leader , but she does the job that is involve of her . A good soldier get going where she is needed ; and if Hayat is needed at the cutting edge then that is where she will be . She keep to fight back for the Syrian Free Army , often mingling her military and SAVE resources to accomplish daunting tasks .
Hayat has come to understand her visions better , and she realize the shadows she encounter aroung al - Assad were manifestation of the Unknown . What she does n’t hump is whether the dictator defile by the Unknown , or did his own evil draw it like pedigree draws sharks ? She suspects the latter ; more Unknown creatures have been describe to Syria as the post gets increasingly worse . She believe that they are no more than parasites going where prey is plenteous , but she has no way of prove her theory yet , and so rarely mentions it .

Hayat remains compulsive in her battle for light and freedom , though sometimes guilt threatens to overwhelm her . It does n’t help oneself that she feel every import drop fighting al - Assad detracts from her combat against the Unknown , and vice versa . Nevertheless she remains determined to do her duty , even if it kill her .
