Back in February , Canon rag the development of a new premium superzoom tv camera aimed at enthusiasts . They have finally taken the lid off completely with the announcement of the Powershot G3X. It looks neat , but may miss some significant features of its competitors .
The G3X , which will be $ 1000 when it ships in July , is a cut above most superzooms in that it sports a one - inch sensor for ranking epitome quality . It ’s the same detector that Canon used in the compactG7X which we really like . It ’s got a 3 - inch touch - screen LCD that flips out and up for selfies because of course of instruction , and a nice beefy grip on the side . The G3X ’s f/2.8 - 5.6 aperture range is passably deplorable compared to its competition . It ’s a trade - off for trusted . More rapid growth , less tractability in low light . My belief is that have a turgid aperture is more significant , and I think many would gibe . There ’s more .
The G3X lack an electronic viewfinder , which both the Sony and Panasonic have built the right way in . For cameras that zoom a long way , being able to stabilise the thing by holding it up to your face is all-important . It also gives enthusiast the tactual sensation of using a professional peter , which should n’t be underestimated by camera maker . Canon will say you could bribe an external EVF if you want . But drop another $ 250 on an accessory is a huge bummer . For video shooters , the Sony RX10 Mark II and the Panasonic FZ1000 book extremist high - res 4 K video . The Canon G3X is limited to 1080p .
Clearly there is some kind of research that tells Canon that masses do n’t handle about EVFs , or that consumers are n’t ready for 4K. I ’m not indisputable how to calculate for that , but it sure does n’t seem like those things are straight from the ground . At least , not for people who are ready to devolve a G on a camera .
Another thing that annoys me is that Canon is commercialize the G3X as feature “ 5 - axis stabilization . ” This might head one to believe that it is stabilise similarly to the lauded systems of Olympus and Sony cameras . However , three out of the five axes in Canon ’s system are digital , while two are visual . That ’s a far shout from true detector faulting stabilization that many associate with the phrase “ 5 - axis stabilization . ” It seems that Canon has simply adopted the naming pattern . That ’s kind of deceptive .
I ’m sure the G3X take great pictures . It ’s got a great sensor with a overnice looking magnesium alloy body , an ND filter built in , and faithfully solid Canon style controls . But the things I mentioned earlier are major feature omissions that flat out ca n’t be answer by Canon , despite its boast of the longest rapid growth . Where the G3X may appeal to people is in its dispirited monetary value . It will be $ 1000 , whereas the RX10 Mark II is $ 1300 . But the Panasonic FZ1000 is only $ 700 , even though it will probably be update shortly with a more expensive good example .
It ’s great to see Canon furcate out , but in a field of stiff rival , they are going to have to deliver excess impregnable performance to lure in need client .
