Did you know you could spot the International Space Station from an airplane ? Neither did I ! But lensman and aspiring astronaut Trevor Mahlmann had an inkling on a Southwest flight last week . So , he got out his gear and managed to shoot this gorgeous , prospicient - photo photo of the blank station zooming by like a shooting star .
As Mahlmann explains in ablog post , shortly after taking a seat on a flight from New York to Chicago , it occurred to him that the ISS might pass overhead during the trip . He bought in - flying wireless local area web , logged ontoheavens-above.com , and discovered that for certain enough , the station was slated to cross the Eastern US at 10 pm , a mere thirty moment later on .
After using Google Maps and heavens - above to guess his own position at the time of the toss , he overstretch out his GoPro HERO4 Black and take a few test guesswork . At 10 premier on the nozzle , using his hoodie to block out the cabin igniter , Mahlmann recorded ten arcminute of 30 second exposures . Then , while still in the gentle wind , he combined 12 of these exposures using StarStax and refine the picture off in Adobe LightRoom .

NASA like the shot so much , they decided to twitch about it from the prescribed ISS twitter news report . Now if that ’s not an aspiring cosmonaut ’s dream add up true , I do n’t know what is .
