Arthur C. Clarke ’s giant space monolith novel Rendezvous With Rama wo n’t be gettinga blockbuster celluloid anytime soon , but this neat short from picture show students offers a tantalizing taste of what a Rama adjustment could be .

This sound composition by Philip Mahoney of Vancouver Film School ( with ocular media provided by Aaron Ross of NYU ) introduce Clarke ’s 1972 tale about a cryptical cylindrical monolith and the astronaut who investigate it . The picture show does n’t delve into the depths of the Rama spacecraft , but it offers a glimpse of the sheer size of it of the Rama and its claustrophobic interior . hat off to these student for take on a Graeco-Roman scifi tome .

I studied Sound Design at Vancouver Film School from October 2008 to October 2009 . It ’s an intense one - yr curriculum that learn you everything you need to know about phone . It was a immense investment in time and money , but I had a great metre . I ferment hard and got a lot out of it . From daytime one , the instructors tell you to start looking for a last project . It ’s pretty simple : flush the net and any other sources you may conceive of for a 3 - 4 arcminute video that you may do the audio for . As in * all * of the sound . You have the hazard to emit life sentence into clean canvas of previously existing telecasting , and state the write up through sound . You do this in the final two months of the political platform . I search around and find a few telecasting that I wish . The only snag is that VFS want you to get write permission to apply the video . I did n’t get my first or second pick . In both caseful it was pretty disappointing .

But then I found Rendezvous With Rama .
This film was created by Aaron Ross , who attend the Tisch School Of The Arts at NYU . It was , I believe , his final labor in 2001 . I say “ I conceive ” because I do n’t actually be intimate Aaron . I contacted him and asked him permit to use his photographic film , and he was very generous and outgoing . He signal the required form and I had the freedom to have a go at it .
So that ’s the first matter I want to sack up : Aaron and I did not work * together * on this moving picture . He create the visuals in 2001 in New York , and I recorded , edited and unify the sound in 2009 in Vancouver . I also wrote the music – I am mainly a composer and have been scoring for twenty years .
