Move over Samsung and LG : Apple has been awarded a letters patent by the US Patent and Trademark Office that describes how theycould manufacture a newfangled strain of curved touch surfaces .
Patent No . 8,603,574 — or “ Curved pinch sensor ” to its ally — report a manufacturing proficiency for curved tactile sensation open which minimizes problems because of substrate warping or deformation . The displays , the patent suggests , could be used in video display , touch pads , touch shiner , and other … thing . Apple Insider key the technology :
To avoid deformation due to the tempering process , the patent pop the question a technique that deposits a conductive thin film over a pliant substratum while it is in a vapid state . Once the electrodes are in place , the substratum package is joined to a curved “ forming substrate ” and later on heated . The cognitive operation result in a non - distorted arch touch sensor stackup with a slender flick that benefits from the mellow - temperature anneal .

Some current curving touch surface really apply a flat substrate , with a curved glass covering to provide the apparent bend . The young proficiency would reject such cheats and , according to the patent , could produce curved touch screen that are thinner than those that use the fast one . The patent also suggest that some more weird and wondrous shapes — like waves!—could be created by apply a 2nd or third forming substrate along the direction . Useless , perhaps , but fun .
As ever , it ’s important to realise that a patent merely suggests that Apple is researching these kinds of technologies , and not of necessity be after to put them into production . But with the current trend for curved display , it seems probable that Apple is at least think quite intemperately about it — even if it does n’t plan to use it . Let ’s expect and see .
