Meet the children of the soon-to-be king.

Crown Prince Frederik, who will become king of Denmark whenQueen Margretheabdicates the throne on Jan. 14, and his wifeCrown Princess Maryshare four kids.

Crown Princess Mary, who will become queen consort and known as Queen Mary when Queen Margrethe steps down as monarch,first metPrince Frederik at a bar in Sydney, Australia in 2000, where he was visiting for the Summer Olympics.

After instantly hitting it off, the couple dated long-distance before getting engaged and later married at Copenhagen Cathedral in 2004. In the years that followed, they welcomed Prince Christian, 18,Princess Isabella, 16, and 12-year-old twinsPrince VincentandPrincess Josephine.

In addition to their full-time royal work,Prince Frederick and Princess Mary’s focushas been on their children. The Danish Royal House announced on Jan. 2 that the couple’s eldest child, Prince Christian, will also receive a title change when Queen Margrethe steps down on Jan. 14 after 52 years on the throne, becoming Crown Prince.

Prince Christian of Denmark

Prince Christian is the eldest child of Crown Prince Frederick and Crown Princess Mary, born on Oct. 15, 2005. As the couple’s firstborn child, he’ll follow his father in the line of succession to the Danish throne.

In October 2023, Prince Christiancelebrated his 18th birthdaywith a lavish gala, including royals from around the world who traveled to Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen to celebrate the milestone event.

“His Royal Highness Prince Christian turns 18 on 15 October 2023,” courtiers said in a statement onInstagram. “Prince Christian’s main priority in the coming year will be the completion of the Prince’s upper secondary education. In continuation of this, the Royal Palace will provide information on Prince Christian’s further youth and education courses when the time is right.”

On Jan. 14, Prince Christianwill receive a royal title changewhenQueen Margretheabdicates and his father accedes the throne. “HRH Prince Christian becomes the heir to the throne and will henceforth be referred to as HRH Crown Prince Christian,” announced the Danish Royal House on Jan. 2, 2024.

Princess Isabella of Denmark

Princess Isabella of Denmark is the second child of Crown Prince Frederick and Crown Princess Mary, born on April 21, 2007 (sheshared a birthdaywith the lateQueen Elizabeth). She is third in the line of succession to the Danish throne, after her father and older brother Prince Christian.

Unlike Crown Prince Frederick and Prince Christian, Princess Isabella’s title won’t change when Queen Margrethe abdicates the throne on Jan. 14, 2024. Currently, Isabella is styled as Her Royal Highness Princess Isabella of Denmark, Countess of Monpezat.

In January 2020, Princess Isabella and her three siblings began a 12-week stay at the international school Lemania-Verbier in Switzerland. However, their plans abroad were cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, perthe royal family’s website.

In May 2022, Princess Isabellacelebrated her confirmationwhile wearing her mother’s white suit at Fredensborg Castle Church — the same place where her father and grandmother were confirmed in 1981 and 1955, respectively.

Prince Frederick and Princess Mary welcomed their third child, sonPrince Vincent, on Jan. 8, 2011. Just a few minutes older than his twin sister Princess Josephine, he’s fourth in line for the Danish throne.

The royal family celebrated Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine’s milestone 10th birthday withnew portraitsin January 2021.

In December 2023, Prince Vincent made an appearance in asweet holiday video. The clip gave viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the royal family’s kitchen during Christmas time, featuring a cameo of Prince Vincent lending a helping hand with the baking.

Princess Josephine of Denmark

Prince Frederick and Princess Mary welcomed their fourth child, daughterPrincess Josephine, just minutes after Prince Vincent on Jan. 8, 2011. The youngest of the royal couple’s children, she’s fifth in line for the Danish throne behind her twin brother.

Princess Josephine lives with her parents and siblings at the royal residence Amalienborg in Copenhagen and at the Chancellery House at Fredensborg Palace. Since she was young, she has stepped out publicly alongside her family at variousofficial outings and events.
