Waititi has become something of a fable in the last few age with his work on What We Do in the Shadows , Thor : Ragnarok , The Mandalorian , and more . But that rise to superstardom achieve its highest peak yet with his very first Oscar .

After his profits , Waititi spoke to the assembled crush about the source of his film , about a young Nazi son who learn acceptance during World War II despite having Adolf Hitler ( play by Waititi ) as an notional Quaker . Waititi observe that he ’s a bit incredulous about the state of things in 2020 .

“ Us shit the film was in response to a resurgence of hatred and intolerance and hate oral communication . And here ’s the thing : At the end of [ World Ward II ] there was a very clear formula , if you were a Nazi , you went to jail , ” Waititi say backstage at the Oscars . “ Now the rules have changed a bit . Ifyou’re a Nazi , sense spare to have arally down in the townsfolk squareand you’re able to pay for all your couple . ”

He continued , “ So something ’s convert and something ’s not correct . And we have forgotten the rules , I guess , so I feel like this is theperfect sentence for a film like this . I feel like the film has become more significant and more relevant today . ”

“ Which is a sad thing , but also good for me , ” Waititi reason , hold up his Oscar , ending a serious sentiment with a jocularity as he ’s been known to do . Here ’s the full snip via Variety .
