If there ’s possibly a more overused musical style than “ found - footage revulsion ” flicks , it ’s the glut of vampire movies we ’ve seen over the past decade or so . So I know your chemical reaction to hear that Afflicted is a found - footage vampire flick is to avoid it . But all you ’d be avoiding is a damn o.k. flick .
Two friends decide to take a class - long vacation , traveling through Europe and Asia . Clif is the movie maker who plans on document his traveling with his sidekick Derek , but the moving picture gives their misbegot dangerous undertaking a bit of necessitate worked up heft because Derek has a watercraft in his brain that could pop at any clock time ; this misstep is n’t just about him living well in his remaining time , Clif ’s films will be as much a remembrance of Derek as a chronicle of their travels .

The filmmakers Derek Lee and Clif Prowse — who are playing their namesakes , natch — make full employment of the first - person camera and the environs to create some damned impressive entertainment . verbalize of , the first - mortal outfit keeps the action front - and - center without resort to rickety - cam , and it ’s so , so apprehended .
Just as importantly , Afflicted does n’t trade in the usual “ OH IS THAT A GHOST IN THE CORNER NOW IT ’S give way ” shocks ; it ’s a revulsion pic like An American Werewolf in London is a repulsion flick , or The Fly . It ’s about what happens to Derek and Clif , how they deal with the flakey occurrence that chivvy them . Sometimes it ’s with humor , sometimes it ’s with shock absorber , and sometimes it ’s horror . But in the end , Derek ’s illness brings some pretty dreaded consequences for both of them , in the natural world and the supernatural world alike .
Afflicted is n’t staring — some of the playacting can get a morsel dodgy , and the picture show uses the Blade / Underworld - ish super - powered modelling of vampirism , which I can see some people disliking ; however , while it does seem a morsel goofy in the commencement , it definitely pays off down the line , again , thanks to how wonderfully they use the “ find - footage ” conceit .
And I do n’t care how much you believe you ’re commonplace of vampire picture or found - footage movies , Afflicted is definitely deserving your clip .
