Google ’s home page is one of the most immediately recognizable websites on the internet — if not the most . And it ’s for that very reason that it ’s also one of the most unmarked . So why fix something if it ’s not broken ? Why the hell not .
There ’s always going to be elbow room for improvement , which is whycollaborative , challenge - base blueprint blog letter Societytook it upon themselves to interpose new life into this most famous of hunting engine . Each participating decorator may have taken a slightly different approach to the revamp , but there ’s one , very important element they all share : They can all learn Google a thing or two .
1. Simplifying Simple
Designed byMark Manalaysay , this redesign focuses on get back to basics . And while Google ’s home page might seem like the image of reductivism , if you really go back and take a look , there ’s quite a bit of haphazardness . Manalaysay explains how he turned down the bulk ( read his full explanation here ):
The first affair to do was absent what I viewed was unnecessary on the household Thomas Nelson Page …
… If I want to future tense - substantiation the Google homepage , I feel like voice search is something that has been ramp up and radically meliorate within the last couple of year . This allow more instantaneous hunt and deeper integrating with Google Now …

… To unify the various services , I fit and made a unrelenting nav bar which will be capable to work with all Google services without drastic redesigns . As you’re able to see with my example for Google+ and Google Maps , you ’re able-bodied to have a navigation cake which stays the same as you bounce between all the unlike services …
2. Touch, Swipe, Browse
Arc Worldwide Art Director Alli Grunthanerfocused on Google ’s roving experience , and even applied some of that pinch and swipe mentalityto the desktop version .
I base my plan off of simple tiles that you’re able to personalize to your vulgar search . I was urge by today ’s engineering of “ touching / swiping / browsing ” … so I thought it ’d be a nice interface to use for the different search fields . As soon as your hunt field is pick out , you see a cursor and can begin type whatever you ’re looking for !
3. In Living Color
Fordesigner Erik Wagner , it was n’t so much about change functionality as it was give Google ’s aesthetics a full overhaul . Wagnerdescribes his visual sensation :
For my execution , I want to bring Google ’s colour pallet forward and create a vibrant , bombastic - than - life bearing for the search function . count on what equipment you ’re on , I have the mathematical function at the bottom of the web browser with a scrubber , allowing the single-valued function to expatiate and take over the web browser windowpane .
4. Google Greyscale
Illustrator and designer Casey Crisenberypretty much went in the opposite focal point , choosing to reject bright colors totally . Crisenbery say : “ On the bottom wharf , user would find their own apps for Gmail , gChat , Maps , etc . The apps would be customizable and interfaced with the cosmopolitan sailing throughout the better half site . ”
5. Trimming the Fat
If the previous two options represent the two extremum on the homepage colouring spectrum , designer Frances Palmer’screation sit somewhere right in the middle . Palmer excuse her design :
Google has some pretty nerveless feature that not a lot of people know without doing some dig . I remember the use of Google Trends allow for a bolder look with the self-coloured colour and white bold textual matter . These are search displayed in real meter . you may also toggle between rural area and see what they ’re seek . I also thought about how the Sir Frederick Handley Page would look if there was a Google Doodle for the day and I imagine it would swap out with the Google Trends .
6. A Life Engine
Graphic designer Jenn DiMenna actually did some crowdsourcing to chance out what people most wanted from their Google home page . And what do you know , Android users had the solvent :
[ My friend Amy ] tell me all these cool things that Google for Android does that I like could do with one app get alone across all of my devices .
So essentially I made Google like a personal dashboard . You have your apps to your rightfulness that includes notifications to tell you whether you are missing your TV show , what you have on your schedule and how many email you have . They are all customizable so you do n’t have any demand apps and then some barren infinite ; you could customize everything on your splashboard … .

… They are fixed and will always be on the side of the screen as long as you are on a Google Sir Frederick Handley Page . you may click them to pull them out to reveal all your information . Or you’re able to select to hide all if pauperism be .
7. Beautifully Bare
Purdue undergrad Jake Nolan’svision hits on a set of the same full stop as the one above , although with less of an Android influence . Instead of change the fashion you interact with Google by turning it into a nursing home - fundament for your lifespan , Nolan ’s redesignlooks to improve how citizenry already use Google in - web internet browser .
I noticed some unnecessary element that could go … I also did not care how I had to click to get at a list of my ordinarily used Google Apps / Tools such as Gmail , Calendar , Drive , YouTube and Maps . This resulted in me pluck them into the bottom with the idea that , once signalize in , those preferent apps could be switched around to include other products the likes of Google Wallet or even an RSS connection for a Blogger page .
… I offer that the voice hunting command is , by default , always combat-ready when Google.com is visible . With voice identification and increase interaction with our technology I opine this could really help immerse the wad in voice commands and human / technology experiences .

So , what do you retrieve ? Are any of these well or worse than what Google gives us now ? Have these designer missed a major fault ? [ Letters Society , Project 9viaThe Techblock ]
